The Assassin Game by Kirsty McKay

Who will be left after lights out?

At Cate's isolated boarding school, Killer is more than a game- it's an elite secret society. Members must avoid being "Killed" during a series of thrilling pranks, and only the Game Master knows who the "Killer" is. When Cate's finally invited to join the Assassins' Guild, she know it's her ticket to finally feeling like she belongs.

But when the game becomes all too real, the school threatens to shut it down. Cate will do anything to keep playing and save the Guild. But can she find the real assassin before she's the next target?

Rating: 2/5 stars

I was provided with a copy via Netgalley and thanks to the publisher Sourcebooks Fire, in exchange for an honest review.

I want you to do me a favor and look at the cover and description for The Assassin Game.

Go go, I’ll wait right here.

Are you back? What did you think? Because when I first came across this book, I thought it looked wonderfully creepy. I mean, just the cover alone with the girl, the mask and the forest behind was FREAKING CREEPY. Add to that the synopsis that promises a game in a private school turned deadly and you have a wonderful book!

Or so it should be, at least that’s what I was expecting but despite the concept behind The Assassin Game being compelling, the story wasn’t all that great.

My issue here was that the narration itself was silly, and so was the plot. I was expecting MURDER! FEAR! SUSPENSE! MURDER! BETRAYALS! MURDER! ANXIETY! MURDER!!!!!!!!!!!! And none of that was on the book.

This is an Elite game played at a Welch private institute, where players have to avoid being killed (which are actually just pranks) and discover who the killer is in order to win. The only way to play is if you’re invited, and this year it’s finally Cate’s chance to belong.

But of course, shit had to go down.

Kind of… at least that was the idea. This was one of my issues with the story, I was expecting something horrible to happen, but up until the end the story remained rather silly and not much went on until the very end with the revelation of the “Killer” which was rather predictable too. Sometimes the pace could get too dull, and it took me over a month to get through it (and I'll admit that the reason I finished it today was because the Netgalley archive will expire tomorrow).

As for the characters, I couldn’t connect with any. Cate’s narration was emotionless, and even the strange love triangle didn’t help *shrugs*

In the end, The Assassin Game promised a lot, but it didn’t fully lived up to my expectations. It was a good story, but not creepy or scary at all.
